Savoy is located in the French Alps region of France. The area was once occupied by the Roman Empire and today the historical land is shared between France and Italy. The Savoy area is bordered by the French regions of Upper Savoy, Ain, Isere and Hautes-Alpes. It is also bordered by Italy. Savoy is rich with history and culture, and is home to many tourist-friendly villages and towns. Popular places to visit include Aix-les-Bains known for their luxurious spas, and Chambery known for being the town of art and history, as well as home to Old Town, a fascinating old neighbourhood worth exploring. Chambery is also the region's traditional capital and is dominated by the Castle of the Dukes of Savoie. The Savoy area is also recognized for its abundance of year-round recreational opportunities, most notably skiing.
