Abbaye d'Hautecombe is considered the spiritual centre of the French Alps. It stands almost directly across the water from Aix-les-Bains, and was built by a succession of monks, starting in the 1100s. It has been a masoleum to many princes of the House of Savoy. In the 19th century, Charles-Felix, king of Sardinia, reconstructed the Abbaye in the Troubadour Gothic style. Mass is held daily at noon, and visitors are welcome.
